Brera Masters Meet Abstract Painters
16 June - 3 October 2010

What's new at Milano's centuries-old museum of painting, the Pinacoteca di Brera? At first glance, you might think that not much can be added to the musuem's amazing Tizianos, Raffaellos, Bellinis, Caravaggios and Canalettos, but a new exhibit has proved this theory very wrong.

The many art history masterpieces that have been at Brera for centuries have been supplemented by two abstract, contemporary Italian artists, Alberto Burri and Lucio Fontana, in the recent exhibit. The two 20th century artists will be on display until October.

The exhibit doesn't randomly place newer art with older paintings, but does so with a purpose, thanks to curators Sandrina Bandera and Bruno Corà. Visitors will get a sense of how they use the same techniques and principles as the masters in terms of color palates, materials, forms and aesthetic code. The same importance of space in painting that's found in traditional painting is also reflected in the abstract painters' works.

Walking through the museum, you'll notice a true dialogue between the old and the new, and the traditional and the modern.

So, if you've never been to the beautiful Brera museum, now is definitely the time to go!
